In the language use of the Internet the term cookie denotes information which is stored on a user's computer, usually within the data structure of its browser. Cookies are set by the respective website the user is currently visiting.
The German Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) distinguishes between two kinds of cookies: persistent cookies and session cookies.
Persistent cookies may remain for months and even years on a user's computer whereas session cookies usually get automatically deleted once the user closes the browser.
